Church Band plays AC/DC "Highway to Hell?"

So I just realized that this band didn'teven change the words and make a Christian parody out of this one...they jusy sang AC/DC to open up their worship service...can they do that? Well more importantly was Jesus rockin out to the song or do you think he left the biulding? I did love the scripture provided at the beginning and end of the song...but doesthat give us a license to play whatever the heck we want to if we just tag some scripture to it? In my opinion I am all for Christian Parody (keeping the music but changing the lyrics) but I just pictured Satan sitting back on this one saying "now this is church!"

  1. Romans 1:28 NIV Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.

It is time we start preaching the gospel and stop this foolishness. I weep to hear them sing that song as the highway to hell is not something to celebrate, but rather something to mourn...

I pray that we wake up real soon...

  2. JOV I agree with you. The church needs to wake up as a whole across the United States and quite trying to entertain people into the Kingdom and stick with the Gospel to do the work of true conversions!

  3. When you look at the lyrics of this song, you can tell they are the words of someone who is clearly certain of their destiny in hell. It is someone who is partying it up while they can, all the way there.

I am a worship leader. And although I didn’t see what happened before and after the song, I personally would not sing this song in church. And even as a worshipper in the body, I would feel odd having this song played and me being expected to sing along to it. But if it was introduced properly, I could see it being used as in illustration along with some video, and then the pastor talking about it. I could see the pastor coming out prior to the song and saying something like:

“the song you are about to hear is a perfect example of a typical sinner who has not found Jesus. Or maybe they have heard about Jesus, but they have turned away, refusing to accept Him, and instead opting for a life of self-indulgence….I do not expect you to enjoy this song, or sing along to it….” And then after the song saying something like “he had one thing right….he is on the highway to hell, that’s for sure.”….and then going on to make a deeper point using scripture.

But personally, I can see both sides to the “entertaining” part of things. I could also see Satan sitting back, watching a young person come into church for the first time, hearing a long, drawn-out hymn and saying to himself “man, church is boring, and the words in this song don’t make any sense to me….I don’t think this is for me.” I can see Satan sitting back and saying “Yes! Another one turned away by old hymns!”

I don’t have anything against hymns. But personally, I am better served with modern Christian music that has the Truth AND a punch musically.

I say as long as the song isn’t going against Christ and is not pointing people to Satan, then it could be used for the Glory of God. I say if there were people at that church service who gave their lives to Christ that day “highway to hell” was played, I’m not going to wish they weren’t saved just because they weren’t saved the way I would like them to be saved. In the end it’s not so much about what song we sing or what kind of drink we have during communion. It’s about God and His Kingdom.

  4. Two questions: If anyone did get "saved" how do we know they are really "saved?" If we don't know that, it seems pretty risky to use it as a end all to a conversation..."it doesn't matter what we do or sing...as long as someone comes to the alter and thinks they are being "saved."
Secondly, don't you think there is another risk that what we "win" them to we more than likley have to "keep" them to? Not sure that someone get's saved because of the song from AC/DC is played? So why play it at all? It becomes too confusing to the lost soul and the believer?
And about hymns, you make it sound like if we play hymns we are boring people to death...is that our job as pastor's to "entertain" and keep from "boring" the sheep? I think 1 John has much to say about the person who is bored in church. Does a true convert really get bored in church or do they celebrate the name of Jesus no matter how it is sung? Let me know what you think!

  5. I could easily see someone hearing that AC/DC song and realizing "hey....that's the way I have been living...all for myself....I'm tired of this...I need Jesus!"

In my opinion, a pastor's job is to bring the Gospel to the world, and to reach the lost and unsaved as well as nuture those who are already believers. I also believe that it is the pastor's responsibility to not let things come in the way him doing that. If he finds that the AC/DC song divides people, it's obviously not the right song to do. If he finds that an old hymn also keeps people from becoming engaged in worship, then it's the same thing in my eyes. If the congregation is best served by old songs, then it makes sense. If you are a church that has a lot of youth and their response to hymns aren't that great, then I think it's his responsibility to change that.

The Gospel doesn't change....but the musical notes and rhythm sure can.

Keep in mind that back when Martin Luther was breaking away from the Catholic faith, his hymns were looked down upon. People don't like change, especially older and more traditional people. But they have to realize again, that the Gospel doesn't change. But the music can.

  7. The simple thought here is that the Church is obviously attempting to be "edgy" to attract a young, hip crowd...etc. It reminds me of the youtube video (I can't remember) where this guy asks people to taste test different cola's and then proceeds to tell them it has a just a little bad stuff mixed in. At some point no matter if you have the right motive, you keep mixing in the bad stuff and you just get bad stuff.

  8. Just saw this today...have a couple of "issues" with your pov. Lemme start at the top and work my way down:

    1. If Satan is sitting in your church, you got bigger problems than the set list.

    2. If anyone did get "saved" how do we know they are really "saved?" How do you ever know if someone is really saved? You don't. God knows, and the rest is in the heart of the believer. Again, set list is irrelevant here.

    3. How you run your church is up to you, if you are successful, that is really up to God himself to judge... likewise, any methods and success thereof from other pastors is up to God to determine. Not you. Save yourself sometime and leave the big jobs to the Man upstairs. You are simply wasting precious time by concerning yourself with the matters of another pastor. Maybe you could learn a thing or 2 from the AcDc method. Otherwise your new theme song might as well be Big Balls, cuz you sure have some if you think you are above reproach.
