Death of a Church

I was in a historical town today spending time with my wife and daughter. We were having a great time just going from shop to shop browsing mostly but also buying a few items on the spur of the moment. It was then my wife brought up to me if I would like to go by the church in town to pick up some coffee. Now you might be thinking, yeah our church serves coffee too, but here's the thing...the church was no longer a church, it was a coffee house. I had heard about this church before from other people and I must say as a huge fan of coffee and also as a called, ordained, licensed minsiter of the gospel having served in churches for the last 14 years, I was intrigued to step inside this church and take a look inside. This experience was quite bitter/sweet as I approached this building that looked just like a church on the outside with the whole stained glass windows and everything. As I entered the church building, it was full of young people and other individuals hanging out with their lap tops sipping on their prefered latte. I could not help but think "what happened to this church?" "when was it that this church lost it's saltiness?" "Did the church lack these same young poeple and impact on it's community?" As I sat and waited on my hot libation to be prepared, I sat back and thought, "without vision, the people parish." Well the coffee house had vision all right, and they did a good job of creating an environment in which to serve up their vision. Could it be that the church you are in today, could be changed into a coffee shop where the only signs of what Jesus did is a lonley little cross in a dark corner of the room? Or a T-shirt on the wall asking the question, "What Would Jesus Brew?" Let me end with this thought...if we as Christians will not be transformed, our churches will be...into coffee shops, bars and banks!

Have you read THE SHACK???

I am sure that many of you have heard about the book, THE SHACK. Some of you may even own it and have actually flipped through it or just read the whole thing, thinking to yourself that this is the best Christian book I have ever read! It is no secret that this book has stirred much emotion and change in people as they indulge themselves in the pages of this bestseller. However, as I bought the book and read it, as it was recommended by "another Christian," I found it to be quite an eye opener! But not the kind of eye opening experience you may have had with it! As I read the book, I saw line after line of bad theology, misrepresentation, and flat out heresy within the pages of wht I now call "The Shaft!" And here is the thing that gets me...this stuff is being sold in our Christian book stores (which is a whole other blog post) and it is even being used as a Bible study in churches! You know it is quite ironic that we as Christians, who most of the ones I speak with, don't read their Bibles much or "like they should", or even at all...but when a book comes out like THE SHACK, they eat it up and then they allow such material to shape their theology or worse yet they use the book as a way to study and examine the Bible. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Taking the Bible and using it as a spotlight to examine books that we so quickly label as "Christian." But because of some Christians lack of Biblical knowledge and spiritual discernment due to lack of spiritual growth, they just except books like THE SHACK as gospel truth. The people who I have run into who have the read the book and claim to be Christians, stand silent as I examine the book under scripture! They only whimper with the words, "You have to remember that it is only a fiction book!" Are you kidding me! So now just because it is fiction, we as CHristians can accept such garbage? Take a stand people! How many Christians got upset and even boycotted theaters when The Divinci Code came out? Or the Last Temptation of Christ? So we get mad in the name of fiction when someone writes that Jesus had sex with another woman and they had some kids of which the bloodlines still exist. Where were the Bible studies coming along side the fiction of The Divinci Code? Nowhere, if I remember right all the Bible studies that came out at the time of the Divinci Code were to set straight, the fallacies of the book and the movie! So just know, yes I have read the book and no I do not recommend it! I have provided a PDF link below for those of you who are interested in learning more in detail some of the error and bad theology of the book , THE SHACK! Also see check out other links provided below on this book!

Veteran's Day Message at Peoples Church of God

Listen to the above message and see what I think makes a "Veteran of War" spiritually speaking. Also I'm interested in your thoughts and your own experience. Do you consdier yourself to be a spiritual verteran? What kind of battle are you fighting? What do you think makes a "Veteran of War?" or "What makes a spritual "Veteran" honorable? Looking forward to your thoughts!

Check this out moviegoers!

Article found at Ray Comfort's "Comfort Food"
Los Angeles (E! Online) - Shia LaBeouf has starred in three straight No. 1 movies. Kirk Cameron hasn't seen his face on a multiplex screen in seven years. Guess who's the hottest ticket heading into the weekend? In terms of advance sales, Cameron's Fireproof, an ultra-low-budget marriage-minded family drama opening on about 800 screens, has smoked LaBeouf's $105 million, opening-everywhere thriller Eagle Eye.

Fireproof accounted for a whopping 40 percent of all advance sales this week on Fandango, the ticket service said today. Eagle Eye was a distant second, representing 17 percent of sales. Through Wednesday, Fireproof was leading the week with 23 percent of all advance sales. No other movie, “Eagle Eye” included, was even in double digits.

A 1980s teen idol of Growing Pains fame, Cameron, now 37, has become better known this decade for his work with his ministry and TBN show, The Way of the Master.

An interesting angle on "Joy"

I was just reading in 1 Thessalonians this morning, where Paul is telling the church that they are his "glory" and "joy" due to their response to the gospel that was preached to them and their continued faithfulness and spiritual growth inspite of severe persecution. I started to think about those who lack joy in their lives. Everday Christians who go day in and day out without really ever experiencing "Joy." Could it be that we sometimes look for "Joy" in places where "Joy" cannot be found? And thn we wonder what is missing form our Christian Walk and our experience with God?? Remember that Paul's "Joy" came from the fruit of sharing his faith and spreading the gospel! Could it be that we need a little nudge to go out and plant those seeds so that our "Joy" may be found in the fruit of other peoples faith in Christ?

Until the nets are full...

23 Minutes in Hell

Okay so a break from facebook right now is in need, so I can get back to my favorite past time next to (making online flairs) and that is blogging on blogspot. Just the other day I was at my local Christian bookstore and I picked up a copy of a book that has caught my eye for so long, but I never thought to give it a read until the other day as I seemed almost drawn to this book by Bill Wiese, "23 Minutes in Hell." Now I know what your thinking that did this guy really spend 23 minutes in hell? I tell you go get the book and be convinced by his experience and multitude of scripture references to back up that experience. I cannot put the book down and even had trouble sleeping last night, but my sleep deprivation comes out of the reality of hell and the brutal fact that poeple are going there everyday, every hour and every minute. This is perhaps one of the most disturbing yet, meaningful books I have ever read! So if your looking for something to read and want to be challenged, broken, enlightened and sent forth, then by all means check this book out. This does bring up the topic of hell and the many views that others may have on the topic. Is hell a real place? Is there real fire? Who will go there? Who is there now? Why was it created? all good questions that can be discussed in this post.

NO EXCUSE SUNDAY: DEDICATED TO MISSING CHURCH ATTENDEES!

To make it possible for everyone to attend church this Sunday, we are going to have a special "No Excuse Sunday": Cots will be placed in the foyer for those who say, "Sunday is my only day to sleep in." There will be a special section with lounge chairs for those who feel that our pews are too hard. Eye drops will be available for those with tired eyes from watching TV late Saturday night. We will have steel helmets for those who say, "The roof would cave in if I ever came to church." Blankets will be furnished for those who think the church is too cold, and fans for those who say it is too hot. Scorecards will be available for those who wish to list the hypocrites present. Relatives and friends will be in attendance for those who can't go to church and cook dinner, too. We will distribute "Stamp Out Stewardship" buttons for those that feel the church is always asking for money. One section will be devoted to trees and grass for those who like to seek God in nature. Doctors and nurses will be in attendance for those who plan to be sick on Sunday. The sanctuary will be decorated with both Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies for those who never have seen the church without them. We will provide hearing aids for those who can't hear the preacher and cotton wool for those who think he's too loud! Hope to see you there!

Questions looking for Answers

Needing something to think about? How about these three questions: What makes God glad? What makes God sad? and you got it...what makes God mad? Have you ever really dealt with these questions and pondered the answer or answers to each? What about looking them up in the Bible? What a journey that would be, to read the scriptures attempting to find the answer to these questions! And for those of you out there who can't find your Bible or don't own a Bible...go ahead...you know you want to..."google" these quesitons and see what you come up with! However, you approach these three questions know that God has provided us with the answers and prompts us to dig for such knowledge like lost jewels! Which question effects you the most? Will it effect you enough to do something about it? I mean if you knew you were doing something that made God sad or mad...would it cause you to reconsider that action, that behavior, that attitude or that addiction? For more on this subject check out the latest sermon series I am currently preaching at www.peopleschurchofgod.com

People Fishing for People

What a week. I can only say that because God is a good God. God is worthy and holy. The God who calms your fears. The God who equips you to do His work. The God who opens doors. Finally, it has started..."Fishing!" No, not just fishing for fish, but real fishing, the kind of fishing that brings in people! For the last couple of weeks I have been taking some guys out by Decatur Lake to have some conversations with complete strangers! Conversations that start out with the weather or the fishing and end up talking about Sin, Hell, Judgement, and Jesus! Wow. All I can say is that people are hungry for Jesus and yes the light does shine brighter in the dark. As of now we have 5 individuals who have signed up to be "Fishing Captains" at our church. These "captains" will be trained in sharing their faith and also be equipped to train others as well. The conversaionts that have taken place have already planted seeds with poeple, watered already planted seeds with people and watched other seeds grow right before us as one individual the other night gave his life to Jesus right there on the docks! So what bait are we using? Good conversation, the ability to swing a conversation from the natural to the spiritual, the 10 Commandments (which the Bible tells us is perfect in converting the soul) and last of all, topping it off with telling people what God did some 2000 years ago so we don't have to go to Hell...Jesus Christ! I have asked each individual that I have talked with 2 questions before I depart: Did I offend you with talking about subjects like Sin, Judgement, and Hell. All of which have answered no I was quite comfortable! And secondly, Are you glad I came by to talk with you? All of which said "Yes"! Remember there is no gift of sharing your faith...it is simply an issue of obedience or _______________ yeah...you get the picture! Be looking for more "Fishing Stories" from our little fishing team. And know that there are people all around you everyday who would love to have a conversation that would change their eternity! DO you care? Do you care enough to do something about it?

No Such Thing As Retirement

Check out Alvin. He's from Phoenix, is 91 years old, and wears hearing aids. He signed up for a One Day Crash Course and then went onto the streets. He would say, "They're going by too fast--I'm missing some of them." When he gave a tract to someone, he would say, "Now be sure to read this--it's got a real good message--it asks what you think will happen when you die--it's real important." People were so endeared to him that one even gave him flowers.

Where it all began here at Way of the Pastor

January 6th, 2006 is when I took my first step into the blogging world and Way of the Pastor Blogspot was created. I posted anew on this blog some 2 1/2 years ago from my heart and my innermost passion. SO as I was looking for what to say in a new post "today" June 16th, 2008, I found myself with the same buring passion of yesterday! So in the words of that guy in the dark helmet..."the circle is now complete." My first post resurrected from the blog vault. FYI When I fisrt posted this in 2006 it got just one comment and it wasn't even about the post? Enjoy:

"It embarasses me to even ask the question: Do the majority of Christians care if people are going to hell when they die. What causes us to pass people everyday without exposing them to the disease of sin and the answer to that disease...Jesus Christ? Do we really believe that we are who we say we are when it no longer bothers us that a man or women may spend an eternity in the fires of HELL? It seems that everyone else in the Christian world is so preoccupied with "keeping the aquarium" or spinning their wheels on meaningless events and discussion. This blog is and was created to help those who consider themselves followers of Jesus Christ to step up to bat and equip ourselves with sharing the gospel message to those we come in contact with everyday. So I leave you with this...Who's job is it anyway? The pastor? The missionary? Yourself?"

A look into the book "unChristian!"

Hey for those of you who are joining our first ever "Book Blog," I wanted to just give you an excerpt from the book that I thought as well could spark some preliminary discussion before engaging in our main discussion of "unChristian." This excerpt is taken from pg. 60 of Chapter 3:

Philip Yancey, in his book What's So Amazing About Grace? makes his own candid conclusion: "Having spent time around "sinners" and also around purported saints, I have a hunch as to why Jesus spent so much time with the former group: I think he preferred their company. Becasue the sinners were honest about themselves and had so pretense, Jesus could deal with them. In contrast, the saints put on airs, judged him, and sought to catch him in a moral trap. In the end it was the saints, not the sinners, who arrested Jesus."

If only our view of outsiders were more like that of Jesus. And if only we condemned hypocrites the way he did: "They crsush people with impossible religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden" (Matt. 23:4).

Think of the overwhelming perception among young outsiders that we are merely hypocrites. Does your life point people to a life in Chirst that bursts with freedom to love, restoration, purity, and transparency?

Or are you burying poeple- insiders and outsiders -under the weight of a slef-righteous life? Do you lift a finger to help?

As a Christian, it's my duty to ask: are you lifting a finger now?

Which one?

Pastor Joe's Discover, Develop, Do Challenge #1

It is so easy to consume your mind with what others are thinking of you? This breeds fear and idleness. We end up being a people who are too afriad to do anything, as we might offend or be rejected. So we abandon practices like tough love, disagrement, confrontation, or simply speaking the truth. This effects how we teach, preach, live, talk, converse, and engage with society! In Acts chapter 4 we see Peter and John combat this temptation to pipe down and quit rocking the boat! I wonder what would have happened if they would have taken the advice of those around them and wallowed in the mindset of "well...we tried?" Instead they voiced a prayer like no other in Acts 4:24-30 After this prayer the Bible tells us that the ground shook, the Holy Spirit arrived and Peter and John went out with a fresh sense of boldness. So to you I ask what is keeping you from shaking the ground where you live? What is keeping you from speaking the word of God boldly? What prayer do you need to pray to end the paralysis of fear, doubt, or worry- in order to become the person God created you to be?

Six major shifts are taking place in churches

By Chuck Warnock (Original article here)
1. The shift from observation to participation. A 23-year old graphic designer recently said about her generation, “We’re creators.” We are in the age of the prosumer that Alvin Toffler predicted in Future Shock – those who create and participate in their creation. Content on the internet is the prime example. The age of the spectator in worship, learning, and service is over. People want to creat worship and participate in ministry, not just watch someone else.

2. The shift from religious education to spiritual formation. During the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, the education model drove church programs. Church buildings were designed with small classrooms. Churches enlisted “teachers” and planned curriculum. Now the shift is to spiritual formation. Willow Creek has just discovered that church programs, based only on an educational model, don’t make better disciples. Spiritual formation — building in the practices of faith in everyday life — produces “self-feeders” that Bill Hybels now says he wants to produce.

3. The shift from “what does it mean” to “what does it say to me” in Scripture reading. Ancient practices like lectio divina make followers of Christ aware of what Scripture is saying to them, not just what it means in its historical setting. Paul wrote, “All Scripture God-breathed.” The old view interpreted that text as the explanation for how scripture was inspired. The new view interprets that passage as meaning God is present today in the pages of Scripture speaking to us now.

4. The shift from “hereafter” to the “here-and-now.” Following Christ is no longer just about going to heaven when you die. Rick Warren’s PEACE plan for aid to developing countries, and his ministry to those with AIDS has broadened awareness of God’s work now, not just in eternity. Care for creation, service to community, and engagement with culture are examples of good news in this life, too.

5. The shift from the individual to the community. For the past 100+ years, we’ve focused on the individual in personal salvation and spiritual growth. We now realize community is both the incubator and facilitator of our spiritual lives. New expressions of community are helping people find their calling, their passions, and a new relationship with God.

6. The shift from belief to practice. People want to actively express their spiritual life, not just agree to a set of beliefs. More church groups are now focused on “doing” rather than “talking.” In pre-industrial society, the apprentice learned by doing, not just listening or watching. The spiritual director of the ancient abbeys provided guidance in how to live, not just what to believe.

Think About This:
So what shift is your church currently making, recently made, or is in need of? Do you go to church now based on certain shifts? Would you stop going to a church if they were missing one of the shifts? In your opinion, which one of these shifts would be most difficult for you and/or others?

Do People Bore You?

May 10, 2008 | By: John Piper

I'm working on a book on the new birth. The final chapter is designed to give encouragements for personal evangelism. I just added a quote by C. S. Lewis that I love. Here’s the whole section to help you move toward people:

Find People Interesting
Be encouraged that simply finding people interesting and caring about them is a beautiful pathway into their heart. Evangelism gets a bad reputation when we are not really interested in people and don’t seem to care about them. People really are interesting. The person you are talking to is an amazing creation of God with a thousand interesting experiences. Remember the words of C. S. Lewis:

It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would strongly be tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. (The Weight of Glory, 14-15)

Yet, most of us don’t think this way. The gods bore us and we return to our video games. Very few people are interested in others. If you really find their story interesting, and care about them, they may open up to you and want to hear your story—Christ’s story.

Does Nickleback bring up a good point?

So here is why you hear a Nickleback song on this blog when it pulls up...I was dropping my daughter off at school this morning and I was scanning the radio when I came across this song, "If Everyone Cared" by Nickleback. And then it hit me like a bug on a windshield, If we did our part as Christians, (if we cared) about those who do not know Christ, there would be those who would not die (spiritually!) Then I thought to myself who is dying around me...do I care? Do you care? Does anyone care? Does God care? And if God cares what is he doing about it...and then this verse came to mind as to how we as Christians are to get aligned with what God is wanting to do with us based on those around us:

Romans 10:14-15
"14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

Who do you know who isn't saved? Next question...what are you doing about it?

Guest Speakers this Sunday 10:30a.m. Service

This Sunday is a special Sunday at Poeples Church of God. Not only is it Mother's Day, but it is also going to be special as we spend a morning with our guest speakers Ravshan and Lisa Uraimov who are missionaries with the organization, Athletes in Action. What Are You Made Of?

What a question to ask not only of each other but to ourselves as well. We assume alot about others and what they are made of based on what we see: their words and actions! But did you know that God sees even further than that and he does not have to assume anything about what you and I are made of? Scripture tells us that God can see our thoughts and that He knows the hearts of man! That statement alone should make us stop and examine the things that we think, say, and do! For the last couple of weeks I have preched about our thoughts and our words, leaving this Sunday to talk about our actions!

Doesn't that seem like the missing piece? Our actions! In today's world people think alot of stuff they don't mean and they say a lot of things they will never do! This rings true inside the church and outside the church. So what about the church? What about those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ? Notice I said "claim" those who "profess" Christianity with their words; these are the ones I will spot light on Sunday morning! I believe that some Christians are MIA: Missing In Action. They are missing out on the actions that God desires of us to show the world His kindness which His Word tells us can lead others to repentance.

So think about it! Why do you do what you do? Why don't you do the things you know you should?! Remember, this world is tired of hearing a message of hope that we so blatantly take advantage of by advertising lives of mediocrity and indifference. So this week, make an honest effort to catch your "actions" up with everything you "say" and "think" in Christ!

Sundays coming...

Why Should I Believe in Hell?

by Hank Hanegraaff

"Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt" (Daniel 12:2 NIV).

The horrors of hell are such that they cause us instinctively to recoil in disbelief and doubt; yet, there are compelling reasons that should cause us to erase such doubt from our minds. First, Christ, the Creator of the cosmos, clearly communicated hell's irrevocable reality. In fact, He spent more time talking about hell than He did about heaven. In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), He explicitly warned His followers more than a half-dozen times about the dangers that lead to hell. In the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24-25), He repeatedly told His followers of the judgment to come. In His famous story of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16), He graphically portrayed the finality of eternal torment in hell.

Furthermore, the concept of choice demands that we believe in hell. Without hell, there is no choice. Without choice, heaven would not be heaven; heaven would be hell. The righteous would inherit a counterfeit heaven, and the unrighteous would be incarcerated in heaven against their wills, which would be a torture worse than hell. Imagine spending a lifetime voluntarily distanced from God only to find yourself involuntarily dragged into His loving presence for all eternity. The alternative to hell would be worse than hell itself in that humans made in the image of God would be stripped of freedom and forced to worship God against their will.

Finally, common sense regarding justice dictates that there must be a hell. Without hell, the wrongs of Hitler's Holocaust would never be righted. Justice would be impugned if, after slaughtering six million Jews, Hitler merely died in the arms of his mistress with no eternal consequences. The ancients knew better than to think such a thing. David knew that it might seem for a time as though the wicked prosper despite their evil deeds, but, in the end, justice will be served. We may wish to think that no one will go to hell, but common sense regarding justice precludes that possibility.

IS ANNIHILATIONISM BIBLICAL?

If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name. (Rev. 14:9-11 NIV)

Just as universalism (i.e., everyone will be saved) is the rage in liberal Christian circles, so, too, annihilationism (i.e., God will annihilate unbelievers) is gaining momentum in conservative Christian circles. The question, of course, is whether annihilationism is Biblical.

First, common sense tells us that a God of love and justice does not arbitrarily annihilate a portion of the crowning jewels of His creation. He graciously provides everyone the freedom to choose between redemption and rebellion. It would be a horrific evil to think that God would create people with freedom of choice and then annihilate them because of their choices.

Furthermore, common sense also leads us to the conclusion that nonexistence is not better than existence since nonexistence is nothing at all. It is also crucial to recognize that not all existence in hell will be equal. We may safely conclude that Hitler's torment in hell will greatly exceed the torment experienced by a garden-variety pagan. God is perfectly just, and each person who spurns His grace will suffer exactly what he or she deserves (see Luke 12:47-48; cf. Proverbs 24:12; Matthew 16:27; Colossians 3:25; Revelation 20:11-15).

Finally, humans are fashioned in the very image of God (Genesis 1:27); therefore, to eliminate them would do violence to His nature. The alternative to annihilation is quarantine. That is precisely what hell is. - Hank Hanegraaff

Paul Washer preaches to preachers

I am glad that there are guys out there like Paul Washer who not only preach to the sheep, but the shepherds as well. Sometimes pastors need to be reminded of what it is all about. There is nothing worse than a pastor who has forgotten what it is all about while pastoring a congregation. So to all the pastors out there including myself...examine yourself to God's Word on a daily basis and continue to strive to be the Pastor that God has created you to be!

Way of the Pastor,
Joe Drew
